Completing the discussion on the ruling regarding standing for the one who enters, whether he is knowledgeable or ignorant?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : How do we achieve this while we differentiate? The one who enters, let him be knowledgeable and let him be righteous, and they remain standing until he sits. I cannot say that this is a disliked practice, as it is said, "If he forgets, I will not forget." In Damascus, there is a library.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : It is called the Hashemite Arab Library. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. Its owners are among the distinguished people of Damascus, and the eldest of them is Ahmad 'Abid, a distinguished man of letters and a poet. He has other righteous brothers, one of whom is named Hamdi, who responded to the Salafi call to a great extent. He told me the following story: He said, "We were invited one day to a large gathering, and they seated us in the front rows, as is the custom and tradition. He said, 'We had barely sat down when a rumor spread through the assembly that the such-and-such Prince is coming now.' So the eyes turned to the door. The Prince entered, and we stood up. We did not cease standing until he sat in the place prepared for him in the first row. Before long, another rumor spread: 'The such-and-such Pasha is coming now.' And indeed, the Pasha entered, and we stood up. We had barely sat down when [the rumor came]: 'The such-and-such Minister is coming now.' We stood up. Here is the joke: I said to myself, 'This is a job. I am not a poet in myself, but it is as if there is a spring under me; I sit and I stand, I sit and I stand. By Allah, we will not be done with this problem unless we follow the madhhab of such-and-such,' meaning he did not name him... He said, 'When we saw the people standing and sitting as if there were something under them... This is a reality that occurs in these public gatherings. So, this is in reality a form of social hypocrisy that has spread and pervaded the Islamic lands. And although this is easy regarding other matters that occur, but we are speaking of this regarding students of knowledge like us, and those who love to always follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
