Yes, this is an authentic hadith narrated by Muslim.
So a house in which there are no datesفبيت لا تمر فيه
because it is a ready food that suffices for everything. So if the people of the house lack it, they are truly hungry, especially if they are accustomed to this thing and it is their staple food.
As for when circumstances change and they have another staple food, then the hadith applies to others. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is informing about the people of Madinah who were accustomed to dates and it was their staple food. Yes.
