Ruling on Placing a Newborn’s Umbilical Cord Inside Books or Throwing It into the Sea

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to a message sent to the program from the Eastern Region, from Baqaiq, sent by a listener from there, our brother (M. H. D). We presented some of his questions in a previous episode, and in this episode he continues to ask about customs existing in the Qunfudhah region, as he says. Among those customs is what he mentioned in his words: that when a child is born, its umbilical cord is cut and placed inside books so that when it grows up, it will love knowledge. Also, they have a custom with another aspect, which is: that the newborn’s umbilical cord is thrown into the sea after being cut, so that it also loves the sea and sea work. And so on, these are customs of this kind among them, and he seeks guidance. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: These mentioned customs are all invalid and have no basis; rather, they are from superstitions. Cutting the umbilical cord and placing it in books, or in the sea, or in the father’s country, or the like, all of this is invalid and has no basis, and it is not permissible to do it; it is from the superstitions that must be abandoned. Yes.
