What is the meaning of “Indeed, a man may speak a word…”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
You are inquiring about the meaning of the hadith. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Truly a man utters words to which he attaches no importance, and by them he falls into the fireإن الرجل ليتكلم بالكلمة ما يلقي لها بالًا يهوي بها في النار أبعد ما بين المشرق والمغرب
Muwatta Malik 56:6
?

Answer:
This is an authentic hadith that necessitates caution regarding bad speech. In another hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, a slave may speak a word from the anger of Allah without being clear about it.إن العبد ليتكلم بكلمة من سخط الله ما يتبين فيها
meaning: what is established therein
Allah will write His wrath for him for it until the day when he meets Him.يكتب الله له بها سخطه إلى يوم يلقاه
Muwatta Malik 56:5
.
Therefore, it is obligatory to be cautious and for a person to guard his tongue so that he does not speak what is not appropriate. He may speak a foul word that causes him to fall into the Fire, the distance between the East and the West, and Allah will record His anger for him because of it. It is as if he is calling to a grave sin, or cursing Allah, or cursing His Messenger, or cursing the religion, in which case he falls into a great evil and a great apostasy. We ask Allah for safety.
Therefore, it is obligatory to guard against the evil of one’s tongue and not to speak except good, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then let him say what is good or remain silent.من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليقل خيرًا أو ليصمت
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2500Sahih (Darussalam)
.
One may speak in jest without being clear or verifying, and thus fall into great evil. For example, saying “So-and-so is stingy.” This is backbiting. “So-and-so is a fool,” backbiting. He is joking, but the sin is great. And worse and greater than this is calling to a grave sin, calling to unlawful sexual intercourse, calling to sins, or cursing Allah, or cursing the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or cursing the religion, in which case he falls into apostasy. We seek refuge in Allah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
