The ruling on blood coming from the mouth when using the miswak

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: I use the miswak with every prayer, but I notice that blood sometimes comes from my teeth. Does that affect the wudu' and the prayer?

Answer:
The miswak is a recommended practice (sunnah) and an act of devotion for both men and women. The miswak is a recommended practice (sunnah) for men and women. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.السواك مطهرة للفم، مرضاة للرب
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5Sahih (Darussalam)
Al-Nasa'i narrated it with a sound chain, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Had I not feared burdening my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use Siwak with everyلولا أن أشق على أمتي لأمرتهم بالسواك مع كل صلاة
Bulugh al-Maram 32
And he also said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Had I not feared burdening my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use Siwak with every ablution.لولا أن أشق على أمتي لأمرتهم بالسواك مع كل وضوء
Bulugh al-Maram 32
And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would, when he entered the house, begin with the miswak" (peace and blessings be upon him). So the miswak is a recommended practice (sunnah) at all times, and it is a recommended practice (sunnah) during wudu' and during prayer. We advise everyone to use it. It is the best of the arak trees, better than any other. One should choose the soft miswak that does not crumble and break apart in the mouth. One should strive for the good type that massages the teeth without crumbling. That is the good miswak.
If something comes from the teeth, such as blood or the like, it does not harm. A small amount is excused. If it is a lot, one rinses the mouth and washes away what came out. But if it is little, the little is excused. If a small amount of blood comes from the teeth, it is excused. This may happen, and it is excused, and praise be to Allah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. If it is a lot, O Shaykh, does one repeat the wudu'?

The Shaykh: If it is a lot, one repeats the wudu'. That is the most cautious course for him. Better. I mean: there is disagreement among the scholars, but if it is very much, one repeats the wudu'. And if it is little, one rinses the mouth and that suffices, and praise be to Allah. And if it is very little, one does not need to rinse the mouth.

The presenter: May Allah bless you. Would you please specify what constitutes "a lot," O Shaykh?

The Shaykh: A small amount by custom, such as small spots by custom, is excused. But something that one considers a lot in one's own mind, that one regards as a lot, one rinses the mouth from it, and performs wudu' if it is easy, as a precaution, to avoid the disagreement of the scholars. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honorمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
Because many scholars say: if a lot of blood comes out, it invalidates the wudu'. And they argue with the hadith of the woman with irregular bleeding, in which he said to her:
Perform ablution for every prayerتوضئي لكل صلاة
But the hadith of the woman with irregular bleeding is about blood coming from the private parts. That is an invalidator without disagreement. If it comes from the private parts, it is an invalidator by consensus. But the disagreement is if the blood is from the arm, from the head, or from the mouth. That is the place of disagreement. Whoever performs wudu' is more cautious. If the blood is a lot, it is more cautious. And whoever does not perform wudu', we hope that his purification is valid, but wudu' is more cautious and better.
As for a small amount, a small wound, from the teeth, from the nose, a small amount, this is excused, and praise be to Allah.

The presenter: May Allah bless you, and may He reward you for Islam and the Muslims with good.
