Does fasting on the Day of 'Arafah expiate major sins?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Does fasting on the Day of 'Arafah expiate major sins?

Answer:
The apparent indication of the Sunnah is that it is for minor sins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided.
Mishkat al-Masabih 564
And prayer is greater than Hajj; prayer is greater than Hajj. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
for A1-Hajj Al-Mabrur there is no reward except Paradise.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 933Sahih (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever performs Hajj (pilgrimage) and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commits sin, nor disputes unjustly (during Hajj), then he returns from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him.
Riyad as-Salihin 1274
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, the Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He) takes pride in the people of the standing place to the angels.
—the standing at 'Arafah, He takes pride in them—
And He draws near, and says: What do these people want?
And he said:
There is no day in which more people are set free from the Fire than the Day of 'Arafah.
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 7:322
Allah sets free people from the Fire. So it is hoped for them that they will be set free from the Fire, and it is hoped for them that they will be forgiven absolutely. However, the apparent indication of the hadiths is that Hajj, like other acts of worship, expiates minor sins, unless one repents from major sins. For this reason, he said:
Whoever performs Hajj for Allah, and he does not have sexual relations nor commit any sin
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 811Sahih (Darussalam)
And Hajj includes the standing at 'Arafah. The one who did not commit lewdness or transgression is the one who has repented from sins; he is the one who came to his Lord without persisting in sins. Thus, his Hajj becomes an expiation for his bad deeds. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
