Combining Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil with Covering the Sins of Sinners

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: How do we reconcile the hadith, which in its meaning states that whoever covers a Muslim, Allah will cover him on the Day of Resurrection, with the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil?

Answer:
You command him to do good and cover for him. If you see him engaging in what Allah has forbidden, such as intoxicants or the like, you cover for him. You do not say, "I saw so-and-so drinking intoxicants." You command him to do good, forbid him from doing evil, advise him, and exhort him to good, and you do not expose him to the people, unless he exposes himself. He is the one who drinks intoxicants in front of people; he has exposed himself. One who publicizes sins has no privacy; he is the one who exposed himself. But if he is concealing it in his home and you happen to see him, do not reveal his concealment and do not publicize his matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever covers (the sin of) a Muslim, Allah will cover him (his sin) in this world and in the Hereafter.من ستر مسلمًا ستره الله في الدنيا والآخرة
Sunan Ibn Majah 2544Sahih (Darussalam)
But you advise him, command him to do good, forbid him from doing evil, and do not expose him. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
