How to Distinguish Between the Names and the Attributes
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a questioner from Syria who says, “O His Eminence the Shaykh: How do I distinguish between the Names and the Attributes? May Allah reward you with good.”
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows.
The Names are clear, if the intention is the Names of Allah and His Attributes; because the question is general. The Names of Allah are those by which He named Himself; such as al-Aziz (The Mighty), al-Hakim (The Wise), al-Qadir (The All-Powerful), al-Sami' (The All-Hearing), and al-Basir (The All-Seeing). These are called Names. The Attributes are: hearing, sight, knowledge, power, and the like. This is the difference between them. The Names are those by which He named Himself; He named Himself—(Exalted and Majestic is He)—such as al-Alim (The All-Knowing), al-Hakim (The Wise), al-Sami' (The All-Hearing), and al-Basir (The All-Seeing).
And the Attributes are: those by which He described Himself, such as knowledge, power, hearing, sight, mercy, and forgiveness, and the like.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
