The Ruling on Visiting the Graves of the Awliya and Making Du'a at Them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: What is the ruling regarding those who go to the graves of the awliya (close friends of Allah), make du'a' (supplication) at them, and place their hopes in them? Knowing that Allah has promised to answer the one who calls upon Him. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Going to the graves involves a distinction. Visiting the graves of the righteous is a sunnah (recommended practice). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Visit the graves, for they will remind you of the Hereafter.زوروا القبور فإنها تذكركم الآخرة
Sunan Ibn Majah 1569Sahih (Darussalam)
So, if one visits them to greet them, that is good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach his companions to say when they visited the graves:
As-salamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu’minina wal- muslimin, wa inna insha’ Allah bikum lahiqun, nas’alul-laha lana wa lakumul-‘afiyahالسلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين، والمسلمين، وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون، نسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية، يرحم الله المستقدمين منا والمستأخرين
Sunan Ibn Majah 1547Sahih (Darussalam)
This is a sunnah (recommended practice).
As for visiting the graves to make du'a' (supplication) at them, or to recite at them, this is a bid'ah (religious innovation). And more severe than that is calling upon them and seeking blessing from them; this is shirk akbar (major shirk). Calling upon them by saying: "O my master so-and-so! Intercede for me... help me... cure my sick person... I am under your protection... I am under your care... I am sick... hasten to cure me," or "Call upon Allah for me to cure me"—this is not permissible. This is from shirk akbar (major shirk).

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
