The Ruling on Vowing to Visit Graves
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q203: The questioner says: She has given birth to several daughters and has not given birth to a son, so she vowed that if Allah granted her a male child, she would visit the grave of al-Abbas every year. Allah has granted her the child, so is she required to fulfill this vow? Or what is obligatory for her in this regard?
A203: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 14:141
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate for them, saying: In another narration: Sunan Ibn Majah 1546Da’if (Darussalam) This is the purpose of visiting graves. As for intending to seek blessing from the dead, or seeking aid from them, or having one's needs fulfilled by them; that is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). It is also a condition for visiting graves; the legislated visit: that it be without travel, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 5:58 So a person does not travel to a place on earth for the purpose of seeking blessing from it, or worshipping in it; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited that, and travel is only legislated for the three mosques for praying in them and worshipping Allah in them;
because they are the mosques of the Prophets. As for graves; one does not travel to them, neither the graves of the Prophets, nor the graves of the righteous, and only men visit them, without travel; for the reason we mentioned of supplicating for the dead, seeking mercy for them, and taking a lesson from their conditions.
A203: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I used to prohibit you from visiting graves, but now visit them, for they remind one of the Hereafter
كنت نهيتكم عن زيارة القبور ألا فزوروها، فإنها تذكر بالآخرةAnd the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate for them, saying:
Peace be upon you, abodes of a people of faith, and we, if Allah wills, are to follow you. May Allah have mercy on those of us who are ahead and those who are behind
السلام عليكم ديار قوم مؤمنين، وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون، يرحم الله المستقدمين منا والمستأخرينO Allah, do not deprive us of their reward and do not put us to trial after them
اللهم لا تحرمنا أجرهم ولا تفتنا بعدهمOne should not undertake journeys except to three mosques: al-Masque al-Haram (in Makkah ), the Aqsa mosque, or this mosque (in Madinah).
لا تشد الرِّحال إلا إلى ثلاثة مساجد: المسجد الحرام، ومسجدي هذا، والمسجد الأقصىbecause they are the mosques of the Prophets. As for graves; one does not travel to them, neither the graves of the Prophets, nor the graves of the righteous, and only men visit them, without travel; for the reason we mentioned of supplicating for the dead, seeking mercy for them, and taking a lesson from their conditions.
