Distinguishing Between Religious Innovation and Independent Legal Reasoning in Worship

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The sister says: Your Eminence! How do we distinguish between religious innovation and independent legal reasoning in worship,
He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequentlyمن سن سنةً حسنةً فله أجرها وأجر من عمل بها إلى يوم القيامة
Sahih Muslim 1017a
or as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said?

Answer:
Religious innovation is introducing something into the religion that Allah has not legislated, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
This is religious innovation. As for independent legal reasoning in worship, and striving to perfect and complete it, that is not religious innovation. Independent legal reasoning in perfecting the prayer, in perfecting fasting, and in guarding against what diminishes the reward of prayer and fasting, this is not religious innovation. And as for his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
He who sets a good precedent in Islamمن سن في الإسلام سنة حسنة
Sahih Muslim 1017a
it means: he revived it and made it apparent to the people. It does not mean: he innovated. Its meaning is: he revived the Sunnah and explained it to the people. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
