Is debt (a loan) disliked?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Who said that debt is disliked except for a pressing need?

Answer:
That is sound. As for debt for which there is no pressing need, it is better to leave it alone. One should not borrow except for a pressing need, for debt is a risk; one may be afflicted and find it difficult to repay it.
Q: But it is reported that some of the Companions used to borrow in order to hear certain hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the virtue of borrowing and repaying. Are these authentic?
A: I do not recall anything of that. However, if one fulfills his brother’s need and lends to him and gives to him, he is rewarded. And in the authentic hadith:
He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrectionمَن نفَّس عن مؤمنٍ كربةً من كُرَب الدنيا نفَّس اللهُ عنه كُربةً من كُرَبِ يوم القيامة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
. There is nothing wrong with debt if one takes it for buying and selling and intends to repay it, so there is no harm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever takes the money of the people with the intention of repaying it, Allah will repay it on his behalfمَن أخذ أموالَ الناس يريد أداءها أدَّى الله عنها
Sahih al-Bukhari 2387
. There is nothing wrong with it, but if one leaves it off out of fear of its consequences, there is no harm. The matter is broad.
Q: Is there anything reported from Maymunah, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), regarding this?
A: I do not recall anything.
