The Prohibition of Imitating the Disbelievers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to the letter of our brother Majdi Muhammad Abd al-Khalik, an Egyptian national residing in Iraq. We addressed most of his questions in a previous episode, and he has one question remaining in this episode. He says: On the Spring Festival, people celebrate by eating feseekh and herring, which appear to be two types of salted fish that are stored in salt and sand for a long period and then eaten. Is it permissible to eat this or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
It is obligatory for the believer not to imitate the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, whether they are Jews, Christians, Russian atheists, or others, in any of their celebrations or festivals, and not to participate with them in any of that. This is based on the saying of the Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani); and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): They said: O Messenger of Allah! The Jews and Christians? He said: His intent with this warning is to caution against following them and treading their path, along with the report that this will happen, but his purpose is the report and the warning (peace and blessings be upon him).
So if the disbelievers in any place have the custom of celebrating with a specific food or drink, or with circles or clothing, it is not permissible for the Muslim to resemble them in that under any circumstances. Rather, he should distance himself from that during their celebration, distancing himself from resembling them in their rituals, out of fear of the punishment and severe threat regarding that, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani).
And the believer fears what Allah has prohibited, wherever he is, whether it is little or much; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1337b and because Allah says, Glorified and Exalted is He: [Al-Hashr: 7]. Yes.

من تشبه بقوم فهو منهمYou will surely follow the ways of those who came before you, heel following heel, so much so that if they were to enter the hole of a scorpion, you would enter it.

Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacity. Verily the people before you went to their doom because they had put too many questions to their Prophets and then disagreed with their teachings.
ما نهيتكم عنه فاجتنبوه، وما أمرتكم به فأتوا منه ما استطعتم، فإنما أهلك من كان قبلكم لكثرة مسائلهم واختلافهم على أنبيائهمAnd whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from
وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا
