The ruling on singing for women and the dabkah dance for men with women
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third and final question in the letter from the sister questioner from Iraq says: In celebrations, such as a wedding celebration, is it permissible to sing and adorn oneself for it? And there is a dance among us sometimes called the dabkah, which used to be performed by men only, separate from the women, but in the present time the matter has developed so that this dance has become one in which men and women mix in wedding occasions. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in that? May Allah reward you.
Answer: As for the known singing that does not involve transgressing the limits of Allah, rather, singing in praise of the wife's family or the husband's family with the hand drum, there is nothing wrong with it, as came in the hadith of 'A'ishah when they visited them, they said:
We have come to you, we have come to you
So welcome us and greet us
And were it not for the red gold
It would not have settled in your valley
And were it not for the red wheat
Your young women would not have grown fat
And what is similar to that of poetry and singing related to praising the husband, praising the wife, praising their families, the husband's family or the wife's family, or things like this that do not contain injustice to anyone, and do not contain backbiting of anyone, then there is nothing wrong with it with the hand drum among women specifically. This is prescribed from the aspect of announcing the marriage, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the announcement of the marriage, and ordered striking the hand drum in it; because its announcement is a required matter so that it is known that so-and-so has married so-and-so, and so that they are not thought of ill. For fornication and unlawful sexual intercourse are done in secret, whereas lawful marriage is done openly.
As for the dabkah that men do, it is not permissible, and if they do it with women, it is more evil and uglier. So it is not permissible for men to do that with women mixed together; because of what is in it of trial and great corruption. As for the men, they have no share in this; rather, this is for the women. And if the men do something that agrees with the Shari'ah, such as training with weapons, and carrying heavy weights, like playing with spears, and shields, and archery, this is the affair of the men alone, in any occasion.
As for the mixing of men and women in weddings or in other than weddings, this is an abomination and is not permissible; because of what is in it of trial. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 3085, and the mixing of men and women in every occasion is built upon much evil, and leads to a great trial, so it is obligatory to be cautious of that. Yes.
