The ruling on feeding chickens from impurities
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: The first message in this episode is a question received from listener (A. A. G.) from the Commission for Promoting Virtue and Prohibiting Vice in the city of Riyadh. The questioner says: What is the ruling on feeding chickens with frozen blood, given that much of the chicken feed purchased by poultry farm owners to fatten the chickens, whether domestically or abroad, contains frozen blood because it has a type of protein that helps in the growth of the chickens? Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for the answer: Feeding chickens or other types of edible animals something of the impurities, such as blood and the like, if the amount is small, does not harm them, does not make them forbidden, and does not make them *jilalah*. Rather, they become *jilalah* and are detained until they are purified and cleaned if the impure food is the majority of their food. As for if it is the minority, it has no effect and does not cause the animal to become forbidden as long as it is twenty percent, thirty percent, or the like; this does not harm. Rather, what makes it forbidden is if it is the majority, such as sixty percent, seventy percent, or the like. With this, it is called *jilalah*, so it is detained until it is fed what is pure and given what is pure to drink. If it is detained for an appropriate number of days, it becomes pure and lawful. This is if the impure is the majority. As for if the impure is small, it is excused, such as ten percent, twenty percent, or the like, until it becomes the majority.
The detention period varies; chickens are detained for three days, which is sufficient, until they are fed what is pure and drink what is pure. The other animals, such as sheep, cattle, and the like, are detained for longer, seven days or more, fed what is pure and given what is pure to drink. Their meat becomes pure thereafter, and there is no harm in that. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you, but this may be a system followed by those who strive to fatten the poultry in the shortest time so that they can sell them?
The Shaykh: We have asked many of those who know about it, and they say: It is a small amount relative to the other food; because it is a small amount. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
