The distance between the sutrah and the one praying

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, Ihab from the Arab Republic of Egypt, residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, says in his question: It is narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the meaning of the hadith that it is not permissible for us to pass in front of the one praying, even if we stand forty [cubits] away. What is the distance that is the right of the one praying, in which we must not pass in front of him? And to which does the hadith apply?

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If one who passes in front of a man who is praying knew the responsibility he incursلو يعلم المار بين يدي المصلي ماذا عليه
Sunan Abi Dawud 701Sahih (Al-Albani)
meaning: of sin
he would stand still forty (years) rather than to pass in front of himلكان أن يقف أربعين خيرًا له من أن يمر بين يدي المصلي
Sahih Muslim 507a
and it is an authentic hadith.
So it is obligatory to be cautious about passing in front of the one praying, except if there is a sutrah in front of him, in which case you pass behind the sutrah. The sutrah is like the back of a saddle, about an arm’s length or less, like an arm’s length minus a quarter or something like that. If you pass behind it, there is no blame on you. Or if there is no sutrah, you pass in front of him at a distance, with three arm’s lengths or more between you and the place of his feet. But if he has a sutrah, you pass behind the sutrah and do not pass between him and the sutrah; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in front of him, then he should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a Shaitan (a Satan).إذا صلى أحدكم إلى شيء يستر من الناس فأراد أحد أن يجتاز بين يديه فليدفعه، فإن أبى فليقاتله فإنما هو شيطان
Sahih al-Bukhari 509
And he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
In case there is not before him (an object) like the back of a saddle, a Muslim's Salat (prayer) would be cut off by (the passing of) a woman, a donkey and a black dogيقطع صلاة المرء المسلم إذا لم يكن بين يديه مثل مؤخرة الرحل: المرأة، والحمار، والكلب الأسود
Bulugh al-Maram 2:98
And he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in front of him, then he should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a Shaitan (a Satan).إذا صلى أحدكم إلى شيء يستر من الناس فأراد أحد أن يجتاز بين يديه فليدفعه، فإن أبى فليقاتله، فإنما هو شيطان
Sahih al-Bukhari 509
.
So it is obligatory for the believer not to pass in front of his brother while he is praying, and to be cautious of what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. And it is upon the one praying to place a sutrah in front of him so as not to make it difficult for his brothers. He places a sutrah on a chair, for example, or prays facing a pillar, or a stick set upright. If he does not find one, he places the stick in front of him, between his hands, lying down, or draws a line in front of him if he is on ground where he can draw a line, or a chair he places in front of him, or something like that, such as his cloak, which he straightens in front of him so that the passerby passes behind it, according to his ability. Yes.
