The Ruling on the Sutrah for the One Praying

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the ruling on using a sutrah for the one praying? And if the one praying is safe from anyone passing in front of him, such as if he is in a desert, for example, what is the ruling on using a sutrah for him?
Answer: Using a sutrah is a recommended practice (sunnah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used a sutrah even in the desert while traveling. So, it is a recommended practice (sunnah) to use a sutrah, which is the size of the back of a saddle, about an arm’s length or close to it, set up in front of him, like a chair, like a stick set up, like the pegs of a saddle, like a vessel placed in front of him, reaching the height of a leg, an arm’s length, or an arm’s length minus a quarter, or around that; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
It is sufficient for any of you to have something like the back of a saddleيكفي أحدكم مثل مؤخرة الرحل
, and in another wording:
If there is in front of any of you something like the back of a saddle, then it breaks his prayer: a woman, a donkey, and a black dogإذا كان بين يدي أحدكم مثل مؤخرة الرحل فإنه يقطع صلاته: المرأة والحمار والكلب الأسود
, meaning: if someone passes in front of it.
So, the point is: if the sutrah is about an arm’s length or close to it, then what passes in front of him does not harm his prayer if it passes behind that. But if it passes between him and the sutrah, it breaks his prayer: a woman, a donkey, and a black dog, as established by the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
In case there is not before him (an object) like the back of a saddle, a Muslim's Salat (prayer) would be cut off by (the passing of) a woman, a donkey and a black dogيقطع صلاة المرء المسلم إذا لم يكن بين يديه مثل مؤخرة الرحل: المرأة والحمار والكلب الأسود
Bulugh al-Maram 2:98
This is authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him).
As for if the sutrah is a wall or a pillar, that is sufficient. If someone passes in front of him and between the sutrah, he should prevent them; because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in front of him, then he should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a Shaitan (a Satan).إذا صلى أحدكم إلى شيء يستره من الناس، فأراد أحد أن يجتاز بين يديه فليدفعه فإن أبى فليقاتله فإنما هو شيطان
Sahih al-Bukhari 509
It is agreed upon that it is authentic. Even if the passerby is not a donkey, a dog, or a woman, even a man is prevented, and even a boy is prevented, and even a beast is prevented, from sheep and others, if prevention is easy. He prevents that if it is easy. If it overpowers him, it does not harm his prayer. If the passerby overpowers him, it does not harm his prayer, unless it is a donkey, a black dog, or a woman, meaning: a mature woman, a mature woman. As for boys, a small one does not break it, a small one does not break it. For this reason, in the other wording:
The menstruating womanالمرأة الحائض
meaning: the mature one. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. If he is in the desert, for example, or is safe from anyone passing?
The Shaykh: Even if he is safe, even if he is safe, the recommended practice (sunnah) is to use a sutrah. Yes.
