Question:
The scholar Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned in several of his books, including Hadi al-Arwah and al-Sawa'iq al-Mursalah, that the Fire will be extinguished. He stated, (may Allah have mercy on him), that the Fire will be extinguished and cited several pieces of evidence for this. What is the correct position, Your Eminence, on this matter?
Answer:
As far as I know, Ibn al-Qayyim and the Shaykh of Islam only transmit the statements of people; they do not choose that position. They only transmit the statements of those who said that the Fire will be extinguished. The position of the people of the Sunnah and the community is that it is eternal and permanent. The statement that it will be extinguished is a false statement, a weak statement, with no basis, and it is not relied upon. Rather, it is eternal and permanent, just as Paradise is eternal and permanent by the consensus of the people of the Sunnah and the community. Likewise, the Fire is eternal and permanent according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, except for those who deviate, and no account is taken of the deviants.
The Fire is eternal and permanent, and its inhabitants are immortal in it, namely the disbelievers. It does not cease or perish; rather, they reside in it forever: [al-Naba:23] meaning: ages after ages, they will never come out of it. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [al-Baqarah:167] This is the explicit text of the Qur'an. The Exalted said in Surat al-Ma'idah: [al-Ma'idah:37] Their punishment is permanent in it; they do not depart from it. We ask Allah for safety.
As for the sinner, he may be punished in it for his sin, and then he will come out. Only the disbelievers are immortal in it. As for those who enter it from among the sinners, such as fornicators, or drinkers of intoxicants, or those who are undutiful to their parents, or similar sinners, they may enter the Fire, but they are not immortal in it. They are punished in it for as long as Allah wills, and then Allah takes them out of the Fire.
As for the disbelievers, they are immortal in it forever, and they will never come out of it. The Exalted said regarding them: [al-Naba:30] And He said regarding them: [al-Isra:97] We ask Allah for safety. All of this indicates that it is continuous and permanent forever, just as Paradise is. The statement that it will be extinguished is a deviant statement that is not relied upon. Yes.

In which they will remain for ages [unending].
لابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًاThus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
كَذَلِكَ يُرِيهِمُ اللَّهُ أَعْمَالَهُمْ حَسَرَاتٍ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَا هُمْ بِخَارِجِينَ مِنَ النَّارِThey will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment.
يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يَخْرُجُوا مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَا هُمْ بِخَارِجِينَ مِنْهَا وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُقِيمٌAs for the sinner, he may be punished in it for his sin, and then he will come out. "So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."
فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًاevery time it subsides We increase them in blazing fire.
