The Ruling on a Woman Uncovering Her Face in Front of Non-Mahrams
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The brother Ali Abdul-Hay al-Qahatani has six suggestions regarding the program: repeating the title of the correspondence, recording the episodes on cassettes and distributing them, writing down the questions and then publishing them, repeating some of the useful questions, increasing the duration of the program, and answering the questions attached to his letter.
We tell the brother Ali that your suggestions are of interest, and some of them are being implemented now.
The first question from the brother Ali Abdul-Hay al-Qahatani from Khamis Mushait says: A bad custom is spreading in the south of our country, and I say “spreading” because ninety-nine percent of the residents of this country do it, which is women not covering their faces in front of non-mahram men, especially relatives.
I hope for a clear and sufficient explanation of this, and a warning to those who do it of the punishment of Allah.
May Allah guide you.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. After that:
This custom mentioned by the questioner, which is the laxity of women in the south in uncovering their faces in front of non-mahrams, is undoubtedly a bad custom, and it is obligatory for the woman to observe hijab from her non-mahrams, and not to uncover her face in front of her husband’s brother, or her husband’s uncle, or her sister’s husband, or her cousins, and the like. All of this is not permissible; because Allah the Exalted says in the clear revelation: [Al-Ahzab: 53]. So He the Exalted informed that the hijab is purer for the hearts of all, and He the Exalted commanded it.
So it is obligatory for men and women to act upon this and cooperate in it, and the woman should fear Allah and watch Him, and beware of what is forbidden to her .
And He said in Surat al-Nur: [Al-Nur: 31], the verse. And adornment includes uncovering the face, and other things. So the face is one of the greatest of her adornments, and likewise her jewelry in her neck, and in her hands, and in her ears. All of this is adornment that must be covered, and likewise what is on her feet of anklets, all of it is adornment that must be covered. And the woman, and her guardian, and her husband should all fear Allah, and cooperate in righteousness and piety, and beware of what Allah has forbidden them.
And it is known that displaying the adornment and beauty of a woman is one of the causes of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) with her, and one of the causes of the occurrence of lewd acts. So everyone should fear Allah in this and beware of His anger . Yes.
