The Difference Between Valid and Permissible

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner is your sister in Allah (Maryam M.) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She says: O Shaykh, what is the difference between valid and permissible? Some rulings are described as permissible, while others are described as valid. What is the difference between them?

Answer:
Valid is the opposite of defective. For example, one might say: this sale is valid or defective. Permissible means not forbidden; permissible is not forbidden. For example, one might say: selling such-and-such, selling food under the conditions of the Shari'ah, selling land under the conditions of the Shari'ah is permissible. As for selling what Allah has forbidden, such as selling intoxicants, it is not permissible. Selling tobacco is not permissible. So, permissible is the opposite of forbidden.
As for valid, it is the opposite of invalid, or the opposite of defective. One might say: this contract is valid, this contract is defective, and so on. For example, if he sold it in a sale containing excessive uncertainty, one says: this sale is defective. If he made a valid sale, one says: this sale is permissible, good, its conditions are complete, permissible and valid. Yes.
