The ruling on kissing the hands of one's parents and others
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to kiss the hands of one's parents and others?
Answer:
It is better to leave it out; kissing between the eyes is better. If he kisses his parents' hands, there is no blame on him. But if he kisses between the eyes, and likewise an old shaykh between the eyes, or on the head, there is nothing wrong with it. And if he is content with shaking hands, there is nothing wrong with that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — sometimes they would kiss his hand, sometimes they would kiss his head, sometimes they would kiss his foot — (peace and blessings be upon him); because he is not to be compared to others — (peace and blessings be upon him). But the common practice with the Companions was shaking hands; the common practice with the Companions was that they would shake his hand — (peace and blessings be upon him).
It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that “when his daughter Fatimah would come to him, he would stand up to her, kiss her, and take her hand. And when her father would come to her, she would stand up to him, kiss him, take his hand, and seat him in her place (may Allah be pleased with her).” So the matter is broad in this regard, but the best thing upon meeting is to shake hands. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to shake hands when they met, and embrace when they returned from a journey.”
