The Ruling on Being Too Proud to Walk with One’s Parents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
One of the sad situations, Your Eminence, is that young people are too proud to walk with their parents, especially if the parents are from the common people, meaning those who did not have the opportunity for learning, education, and culture. May Allah reward you with good for your guidance.

Answer:
This is also a mistake. It is obligatory for the son to be humble, to recognize the status of his parents, to thank Allah for the knowledge and insight He has given him, and to use that to guide his parents with wisdom and kind words. He should alert them to what may be hidden from them, and be at the utmost in affection for them, humility toward them, submission, and modesty, as Allah commanded in that regard (Glorified and Exalted is He). He said: He said:
And lower to them the wing of humilityوَاخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ
[Surat al-Isra: 24].
Therefore, it is obligatory to be humble toward one’s parents and to recognize their status, even if they are uneducated. He must recognize their status, treat them well, and deal with them with cheerfulness, humility, and kind words. This is among the most important obligations. He must not prefer a companion or a friend or anyone else over them. Rather, he must recognize their right and treat them well at all times. If it happens that they speak against him in some matters or criticize him in some matters, he should clarify to them what may be hidden from them and make it clear to them. He should seek the help of the people of good among his relatives if his own words do not benefit them with them. He should seek the help of the good and kind among his uncles, maternal uncles, and good neighbors so that they explain to the parents what needs to be explained regarding the son’s situation and the son’s right upon his parents, which is that they help him in good and guide him to good. The parents have a right, and the son also has a right.
Therefore, the parents must help him in good and not discourage him from good. Rather, they must help him in prayer in congregation, in the company of the good, and in leaving the company of the evil. They must help him in seeking knowledge and in earning lawful income. And he must recognize their status, treat them well, be humble toward them, be dutiful to them, and fulfill their right. May Allah grant everyone success and guidance.

The presenter: May Allah accept it. Your Eminence! In conclusion, I extend to you my sincere thanks, after thanking Allah , for your kindness in answering the esteemed listeners, and I hope that we will meet again and that you are in good health.

The Shaykh: Amen, we ask Allah for that.
