Ruling on deducting the debt of an insolvent person from zakah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener (M. Naji Isa) from Jizan sent a question, saying: If I have a sum of money owed to me by a person, and he is unable to repay it, am I allowed to leave it with him while intending it to be zakah on another portion of my wealth?

Answer:
That is not permissible for you. Rather, you should give him time and wait for him until he pays you, if Allah wills. You should be lenient with him and forgive him. May Allah reward you with good. As for making the debt owed by insolvent people your zakah, no, that is not valid. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
