The ruling on sitting with sinners and the ruling on saying “by the status of your Prophet”
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to sit with the people of open sinfulness and disobedience?
The second question: If a person asks Allah using good invocations and then says, “By the status of your Prophet, and by the status of your House,” and he is advised but does not take the advice, what should be done?
Answer:
This is seeking nearness to Allah through status, rights, and the ancient House of Allah, and the like. This is a means that is not prescribed. Allah has not prescribed for us to seek nearness to Him by the status of so-and-so, or the right of so-and-so, or by the ancient House of Allah, or the like. This is a religious innovation. It does not become major shirk, but it is a religious innovation, and it is one of the means to shirk. For Allah the Exalted said: [Al-A’raf: 180]. He did not say, “Call upon Him by the status of Muhammad, or by the status of the prophets, or by the status of the awliya, or by the right of His ancient House.” No, He said: meaning: by His names. So He is called by His names and attributes, and He is called upon through tawhid, as the hadiths have come with that. As in the hadith: Bulugh al-Maram 16:125. This is seeking nearness to Allah through tawhid. And like the hadiths of the people of the cave, upon whom a rock fell when they took refuge in a cave at night in the rain. A rock fell upon them and blocked the mouth of the cave, so they could not get out. They said among themselves: “Nothing will save us from this except that we seek nearness to Allah by our sincere deeds.” So they sought nearness to Allah: one sought nearness by his kindness to his parents, the second by his chastity from zina, and the third by his fulfillment of a trust. So Allah relieved them.
If a person seeks nearness to Allah by the names of Allah, or by the tawhid of Allah, or by saying, “By my faith in You and my love for You,” or “By my faith in Your Prophet and my love for Your Prophet,” or “By fulfilling what You have made obligatory upon me of Your obedience,” or “By leaving what You have forbidden to me,” this is seeking nearness to Allah by righteous deeds, and there is nothing wrong with it.
As for associating with the open sinners and sitting with them, it is not permissible; because they will drag him into their open sinfulness and misguidance. But if he mixes with them for the sake of calling to Allah, and forbidding the falsehood they are upon, and directing them to good, for this purpose: he commands them and forbids them and makes them see; then there is nothing wrong. He is commanded to do so. But if he takes them as companions and close friends, sitting with them and eating with them, then no; because they will drag him into calamity.
