The ruling on one who takes some of Islam and leaves some of it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your Eminence, peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that: We hear these days that there are young people who understand Islam from some of its aspects, and every group calls itself by a name. I ask for a guiding word for these young people?

Answer:
It is obligatory for the young and the old, and for every believing man and woman, to take Islam in its entirety and to seek it in its entirety, not part of it. They must deepen their understanding of the religion and be clear-sighted in what Allah and His Messenger said, and in what Allah and His Messenger legislated, and they must stand firm upon that. They must not hold fast to some of it while leaving the rest; rather, they must study all of Islam and care for all of it, so that they understand what Allah has commanded and act upon it, and so that they know what Allah has forbidden and avoid it. All of them must cooperate; all the associations and all the young people everywhere must cooperate in righteousness and piety. They must not harm one another, nor disparage one another, nor belittle one another, nor envy one another. So they cooperate: What did Allah say? What did His Messenger say? What is the meaning of the verse? What is the meaning of the hadith? What is Allah’s ruling on such and such? What is the evidence?
Then they take the words of the scholars, seeking help from the words of the scholars among the great imams in their books, not sparing any effort in that, for the scholars have written and clarified, may Allah have mercy on them. So they seek help from their large and small books, such as the books of al-Muqaddam ibn Qudamah, al-Nawawi, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Kathir, and others among the scholars. They seek help from the books found in the schools of jurisprudence, especially the books that focus on the evidence: what Allah said, and what His Messenger said. They benefit from them, and likewise the books of hadith and their commentaries. This is the student of knowledge.
But the beginner starts with the concise books and does not involve himself in what he is not good at. He starts with the concise books and cares for memorizing the Qur’an, and memorizes the book of Tawhid, al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah, The Three Fundamental Principles, Kashf al-Shubuhat, The Principles of Faith, The Excellence of Islam, and similar concise books, so that he benefits little by little. He does not enter with people into what he does not know and what is difficult for him, but rather he knows his own capacity and stops at his limit.
But it is obligatory for those who understand to be one thing, and to cooperate in righteousness and piety, and not to divide, and to help one another in understanding the text and what it indicates. They must not be proud if their brother guides them or points them out to a benefit. Let him say: May Allah reward you with good. The great scholars have many matters hidden from them, so if their brother guides them, they rejoice in that, like the Companions, who are the most knowledgeable people after the prophets. Some of them would guide some, and point some out to some, and the other would say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, and he would say: I heard so-and-so from the Messenger of Allah, and they would rejoice in that with great joy. Then the Tabi'un after them: like Ibn al-Musayyib, Tawus, Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman, al-Sha'bi, and others, they cooperate. And likewise those after them: like Malik, Abu Hanifah, and al-Shafi'i, each one needs the knowledge of his brother and cooperation with his brother.
So the one who is proud to be guided or criticized has contradicted the people of the Sunnah. Each one of us has errors, and understands some things, and errs in some things. So let him rejoice in the one who helps him and points him to good and guides him to a matter that was hidden from him, or a proof that was hidden from him.
Then let cooperation be the standard and the constant practice among all of them, not that each one goes his own way and competes with the other and opposes him. No, this is the way of the people of innovation from the Jahmiyyah, the Mu'tazilah, the Rafidah, and others. As for the people of the Sunnah, no, the people of the Sunnah cooperate among themselves, guide one another, help one another, and be one association, and their goal is one, which is following the truth.
