The Ruling on Marriage with the Intention of Divorce and Distinguishing It from Mut'ah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I heard that Your Eminence has permitted temporary marriage (mut'ah). Is this correct?

Answer:
It is not correct; this is invalid. Rather, a fatwa was issued by me and the Permanent Committee stating that if a man marries and his intention is to divorce, there is no harm in that. This is not mut'ah; it is between him and Allah. If he marries and intends to divorce when he finishes his studies, or his trade, or his term as an ambassador, or something similar, it does not harm him. This is the correct view held by the majority of scholars. Al-Muqaddam mentioned this in *Al-Mughni* as the view of the majority of scholars, and he did not mention any disagreement except that of Al-Awza'i.
As for mut'ah: it is when they agree on a known duration with her guardian or with her: for one month, for two months, for one year. This is mut'ah; they agree on a known condition between them.
