The Ruling on Sitting with Those Who Engage in Backbiting about Muslims

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Also, our sister asks and says: I do not like backbiting, but sometimes I am in a gathering of women who talk about backbiting, and without realizing it, I find myself participating with them. When I review my actions, I regret my speech about the honor of my Muslim brothers with severe regret, and I seek forgiveness from Allah, and I say: I will not return to backbiting again. But I find myself falling into backbiting once more. What should I do to get rid of this bad habit that has spread in society? It contains within it warnings and condemnation.
I hope you will advise me, guide me, and pray for me and for all Muslims that Allah may save us from backbiting. And what should I say to one who backbites people? May Allah reward you.

Answer:
We advise you not to attend gatherings where there is backbiting, and to make an excuse. If it happens that you attend, then deny them and do not backbite. Say: O servants of Allah! This is not permissible, this is forbidden. Allah the Exalted says:
or backbite each otherوَلا يَغْتَبْ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا
[Al-Hujurat: 12]. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it, and informed that backbiting is
It is saying something about your brother which he would dislikeذكرك أخاك بما يكره
Sunan Abi Dawud 4874Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It was said: O Messenger of Allah! What if there is in my brother what I say? He said:
If what you said about him is so, then you have backbitten him, and if it is not as you said, then you have slandered him.إن كان فيه ما تقول: فقد اغتبته، وإذا لم يكن فيه فقد بهته
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1934Sahih (Darussalam)
.
And in the hadith from him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:
I saw on the night of the Isra' a people who had nails of brass, and they were scratching their faces and their chests with them. I said: O Jibril, who are these? He said: These are the ones who eat the flesh of people, and fall into their honorرأيت ليلة أسري بي قومًا لهم أظفار من نحاس يخمشون بها وجوههم وصدورهم، فقلت: يا جبرائيل من هؤلاء؟ قال: هؤلاء الذين يأكلوا لحوم الناس، ويقعون في أعراضهم
meaning: it is from backbiting, and this is a severe warning.
And if you fall into that, then repentance to Allah is obligatory upon you, and seeking forgiveness from the one you backbited if possible. You say: Forgive me, pardon me, I fell into your honor. If that is not facilitated, then increase in seeking forgiveness, and adhere to repentance, and mention the one you backbited with good words that you know about him. Mention him with the good morals that you know about him, and the good deeds. Meaning: instead of mentioning him with backbiting and disliked things; mention him in the gatherings where you backbited him with the good thing you know about him, and the good morals that you know about him.
So this is with this, along with repentance and regret, and ceasing and caution. And this is my advice to you and to all Muslims. The advice for all Muslims: caution from backbiting, and caution from other sins, and not sitting with the people of backbiting, and the people of sins; because sitting with them leads to their actions.
So what is prescribed for the believer is not to sit with anyone except one who helps him in good, and benefits him in his religion and his worldly life. As for sitting with one who drags you to evil, and calls you to evil; it is not permissible. So it is obligatory to always be cautious from sitting with the people of apparent sins and the people of religious innovation, and sitting with everyone who calls you to falsehood, and to what angers Allah against you. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
