The ruling on one who hears the adhan for prayer and then is overcome by sleep
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: What is the ruling on the prayer of one who hears the adhan while sleeping, and tries to get up for prayer, but sleep and laziness overcome him, and after the people have finished their prayer, he gets up and prays alone in his house?
Answer:
This is reprehensible; it is not permissible for him to do that. He must hasten when he hears the call; he should hasten and get up. He has to sleep early so that he is energetic, and he should set the alarm clock. If he stays up late, this laziness will occur. So it is obligatory for him to fear Allah and to perform the obligatory acts that help him to get up. He should not stay up late, but rather sleep early. When he hears the call or the clock rings, he should get up and pray with the Muslims in the mosques.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Bulugh al-Maram 2:308 It was said to Ibn Abbas: What is the excuse? He said: Fear or illness.
A blind man came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have no guide to lead me to the mosque. Do I have a dispensation to pray in my house? He said:Sahih Muslim 653 He said: Yes. He said: If the blind man who has no guide is ordered to respond, feeling his way along the wall and walking until he reaches the mosque, how much more so the seeing man who is able to do so?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to burn down the houses of those who lagged behind because of their leaving the prayer in the mosques.
So it is obligatory for the believer to fear Allah, to be conscious of Allah, to hasten to the mosques at night and day, to pray with the people, and not to be lax about praying in the house, except if he is sick—may Allah guide us.

Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.
