What is the ruling on removing the inscriptions on graves?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If a person visits the cemetery and sees marble on one of the graves with the name of the deceased and the date of his death written on it, should he remove it?

Answer:
He should remove it; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade writing on graves, he forbade writing on them, and building on them. So if he finds writing on a grave, he should remove it.
Q: But if he removes it, it might cause him harm?
A: He should refer the matter to the authority. If he fears something, he should refer the matter to the rulers, saying: I saw such and such in such and such a place.
Q: The author of *Takhmis al-Habir* reported that writing on graves is an addition that is not established?
A: No, it is established. It is established that he forbade writing on graves.
Q: What about writing if numbers are placed?
A: Likewise, the numbers are removed. Writing is understood.
Q: And what is the wisdom behind the prohibition?
A: It may be a cause of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) regarding the person. This was not placed on him except for a reason. And if he is named, it may lead to fitnah because of him; because he is an amir, or a worshipper, or a scholar, or something.
Q: If the person places it himself to know his father?
A: No, he should place a marker, something: a stone, or a stick, or a small piece of wood, or something, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught regarding Uthman ibn Maz'un with a stone.
Q: Does the prohibition of writing also include the wall of the fenced cemetery?
A: Yes, all of it.
