The Shaykh’s explanation of the necessity of being aware of many published hadiths that are in reality proverbs and sayings, and the explanation of the prohibition of attributing them to the Messenger (peace be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: And many of the hadiths attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are not valid from the perspective of hadith methodology, though many of them may have acceptable and correct meanings, and this is very common. For example, some of the inscriptions used to decorate walls, such as: "The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Allah." This is narrated as a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but it is not authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), yet it is a place of wisdom. Is it permissible to attribute to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) every statement that contains wisdom, a lesson, or an admonition? The answer is: No. This is because the principle we sometimes hear from some of them is not an Islamic principle, which states: "The end justifies the means." This is never an Islamic principle. Therefore, we say: If there is a sentence that is at the peak of wisdom, do we say: The Messenger of Allah said it, to promote it and make it smooth among people? The answer is: He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever says something about me that I did not say, let him take his place in Hell. مَن قال عليَّ ما لم أقل ، فليتبوَّأ مقعده من النار
Musnad Ahmad 469Hasan (Darussalam)
; therefore, the science of hadith is in reality one of the fundamental sciences in the Islamic Shari'ah. Nevertheless, I say with regret: the science of hadith has not received the service that is obligatory for Muslim scholars to perform toward the hadith of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); because over the long passage of time, what is innocent of it has entered into it, as it is said: "The innocence of the wolf from the blood of the son of Jacob." So in every era, we hear hadiths that are fabricated, in common expression, fresh, fresh, fresh, as it is said.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, as it is said: A thing is mentioned by its like.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.
