The Ruling on Women Wearing White Clothing

Question:
Is it permissible for women to wear white clothing?

Answer:
It is permissible to wear white clothing if it is in a proper manner, without imitating men. If it has features, such as stitching or connections, that distinguish it from men’s clothing, that is fine. However, wearing white in the manner of men is not permissible; it is imitation.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the woman who wears the clothing of men. But if she wears white, or black, or red in a manner that does not resemble men, that is acceptable. Men also wear red; they wear red jackets, black ones, green ones, and so on. Therefore, her clothing must not be like the man’s clothing, and it must be distinct. Otherwise, if she imitates him, she is cursed, and if he imitates her, he is cursed. Both of them are cursed. Therefore, both of them must avoid imitation. She should wear clothing that does not resemble his, and he should wear clothing that does not resemble hers. This is what is obligatory for both of them.
