Wearing the Suit
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 1620 )
Q1: It has become widespread in many Muslim countries to wear the suit , that attire consisting of a jacket and trousers, and sometimes the clothing is limited to trousers and a shirt or a long-sleeved or half-sleeved T-shirt, in summer due to the intense heat. Does wearing this attire fall under the category of imitating non-Muslims, or not?
Vol. 1: The original ruling regarding types of clothing is permissibility, as it falls under matters of custom. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-A'raf 7:32] However, what is indicated by Islamic evidence to be forbidden or disliked is an exception, such as silk for men, and clothing that reveals the 'awrah, whether because it is transparent and the color of the skin is visible through it, or because it is tight and outlines the 'awrah, for in that case it is considered equivalent to exposing it, and exposing it is not permissible. It also includes clothing that is a distinctive mark of the disbelievers, specific to them, so it is not permissible for men or women to wear it, due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) against imitating them. It also includes men wearing women's clothing and women wearing men's clothing, due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) against men imitating women and women imitating men.
The clothing known as the pant and the shirt is not something whose wearing is specific to the disbelievers; rather, it is general clothing among Muslims and non-Muslims in many countries and states. People may feel averse to wearing it in some countries due to lack of familiarity and because it contradicts the custom of the inhabitants regarding clothing, even if it aligns with the custom of other Muslims. However, it is better for a Muslim, if he is in a country where the people are not accustomed to that clothing, not to wear it in prayer, in public gatherings, or in the streets. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
