Defining the Disliked and the Forbidden

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question in the letter of the brother: Sharif Khalifa Ahmad al-Sudani, residing in Riyadh, says: What is the disliked (makruh) and what is the forbidden (muharram)? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: The disliked (makruh) according to the scholars is: that which should be left, but one does not commit a sin by doing it, though its doing is disliked. For example, talking after the 'Isha' prayer, other than in knowledge or necessary matters; because it may occupy one from the obligatory prayer, or it may cause staying up late.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked sleeping before it and talking after it.كان النبي يكره النوم قبلها والحديث بعدها عليه الصلاة والسلام
Similarly, excessive talking in the mosques about worldly matters is disliked and not forbidden. Also, idle talk that has no benefit is disliked.
And the forbidden (muharram) is: the prohibited, forbidden thing, such as backbiting, talebearing, false testimony, and false oaths. It is called: forbidden, and it is called: prohibited, and it is called: forbidden (haram), such as severing family ties, such as undutifulness to parents, such as consuming usury or interest (riba). All of these are called: forbidden, and they are called: prohibited, and they are called: forbidden (haram). And what is below that, of the things that should be left, but there is nothing in the evidence that forbids or prohibits them, yet leaving them is required, is called: disliked (makruh), as mentioned before, such as talking after the 'Isha' prayer without necessity or need, and as mentioned before, excessive talking in the mosques about worldly matters is disliked, and such as talk that has no benefit, where one would delve into things that have no benefit or ask about what does not concern him. Leaving this is better, and it is disliked, and delving into what does not concern him. Yes.
Such as leaving the voluntary prayers, leaving the sunnah of the Zuhr prayer is disliked, leaving the sunnah of the Maghrib prayer is disliked, leaving the sunnah of the Fajr prayer is disliked. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
