The ruling on supplicating for those who abandon prayer and disbelievers, and seeking forgiveness for them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: Also from the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, this message reached us from Jarash, sent by one of the sisters from there, saying: Hadiyyah Muhammad al-Jibali. Our sister has a set of questions:
Her first question says: Is it permissible to offer condolences and supplicate for one who abandons prayer or is negligent in it, and likewise for a Christian, meaning a disbeliever? And is it valid to curse them, invoke Allah’s curse upon them, or insult them after death?
The answer: As for one who dies among the Jews or the Christians or the worshippers of idols, and so on, or one who dies abandoning prayer or denying its obligation, all of these are not to be supplicated for, nor offered condolences for, nor sought forgiveness for; because of the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
[At-Tawbah: 113]. And it is established in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
That he sought permission from his Lord to seek forgiveness for his mother, but He, the Exalted, did not grant him permission
Even though she died in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance and did not reach Islam, she died upon the religion of her people, worshipping idols. So he sought permission from his Lord, but He did not grant him permission to seek forgiveness for her. If a woman who died in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance upon the religion of idols was not granted permission for him to seek forgiveness for her, and she was his mother, how much more so for others, (peace and blessings be upon him)? So one who dies upon disbelief is not to be sought forgiveness for, nor supplicated for: not the one who abandons prayer, nor the worshipper of graves, nor the Jew, nor the Christian, nor the communist, nor the Qadiani, nor their like who engages in what makes them disbelievers and takes them out of the circle of Islam.
As for insulting them, they are not to be insulted after death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not verbally abuse the dead, for they have reached the consequences of what they did.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1936Sahih (Darussalam)
Al-Bukhari narrated it in the Sahih from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):
Do not verbally abuse the dead, for they have reached the consequences of what they did.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1936Sahih (Darussalam)
Leave them to Allah; Allah will reward them for their deeds, so there is no need to insult them.
However, a group of scholars mentioned that there is no harm in insulting one who is famous for misguidance, disbelief, and calling to falsehood, by way of warning, even after death. Just as it is said: “May Allah fight Pharaoh,” “May Allah curse Pharaoh,” “May Allah curse the callers to misguidance,” “May Allah curse Abu Jahl,” and the like of the callers to misguidance, by way of deterring from their ugly deeds. This was said by a group of scholars by way of deterring, if the person is famous for misguidance, disbelief, and calling to misguidance, or for oppressing people. Some scholars permitted insulting him by way of deterring and by way of warning from the like of his work. And if one leaves off insulting him, acting upon this hadith:
Do not revile the dead
then this is by way of precaution, and it is better and more appropriate. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
