Ruling on Recording Lectures and Lessons on Video Tapes

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A fatwa was issued by His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, may Allah preserve him and bless him. Also, this question is from our brother, a high school student named Omar Majid Muhammad Sa'id from Jordan. In his second question, he says: A fatwa was issued by His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, may Allah preserve him and bless him, and the meaning of that fatwa was that whoever has tapes of what is called video containing obscene and evil material, and he repents to Allah the Exalted, he should record good and beneficial material on them, and this removes the evil from them. The inquiry is: What is meant by "good"? Is it circles of knowledge, Shari'ah lessons, and recitation of the Qur'an? If this is what is meant, does it fall within the scope of forbidden image-making or not? If it falls within this scope, how is its use permissible? And if it does not fall within this scope, what are the Shari'ah evidences for that?
Finally: I ask His Eminence Shaykh Abdul Aziz to please clarify his full address, so that we may ask him about other matters.
Answer: The intention is that tapes containing something that should not be there—where something inappropriate has been recorded—do not need to be destroyed. Rather, good material should be recorded on them so that this money is not wasted without benefit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the waste of wealth. So, record on them what benefits people. For tapes that require video recording, if there is a need for it, and beneficial seminars and beneficial lectures are recorded on them that benefit people, there is no harm in that, from the perspective of prioritizing the great benefit over the harm and evil in image-making.
So the intention of all this is: that creating a video that benefits people, where beneficial knowledge, useful lectures, and good seminars have been recorded, is better than leaving it and destroying it without benefit. This is the intention: to record on it, in place of the bad thing, what benefits people from good lectures, good seminars, and the like of what benefits people. This is the intention.
As for the address: The address is known: Riyadh, the General Presidency for Research Studies, Ifta, and Guidance. This is the address, the General President of Research Studies, Ifta, and Guidance, Riyadh. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
