Fatwa number ( 8923 )
Q: We inform Your Eminence that we are at a Qur'an memorization school in Harimla, and we have a small lecture hall that does not accommodate all the guests, let alone the students. We hold some lectures, scientific conferences, and celebrations, and we wish to transmit them to another location using a videotape device. We hope Your Eminence will provide information on the following: 1 - Is it permissible to transmit these lectures and conferences using a videotape device? It is known that this is transmission without recording on its specific tapes. 2 - Is it permissible to record the lectures and conferences on videotape; for the purpose of showing them again to benefit from them?
A : First: If the scientific lectures and conferences themselves do not contain anything that contradicts the rulings of Islam, it is permissible to transmit them using a videotape device, in order to generalize the benefit and spread the knowledge. Second: It is permissible to record the lectures and conferences on videotape; to show them again, increasing the benefit from them whenever the need arises.
This is because this device has no ruling in itself; rather, it is suitable for use in good and evil. If it is used for good, it is good, and if it is used for evil, it is evil. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
