Refuting the Doubt That Allah Torments Those He Did Not Guide
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question contains something of a strangeness. Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz says: Some people ask: How can Allah not guide you to Islam and throw you into the Fire?
Answer: Allah is Wise and All-Knowing (Glorified and Exalted is He) . He created some people for Paradise, with their names and the names of their fathers, and He decreed their deeds. He created another group for the Fire and decreed their deeds. He is the Wise, the All-Knowing (Glorified and Exalted is He) . Those for whom it is decreed that they are from the people of Paradise are facilitated to do the deeds of the people of Paradise. Those whom Allah has written that they are from the people of the Fire proceed to do the deeds of the people of the Fire, and they act accordingly. As He said (peace and blessings be upon him) : [Al-Layl: 5-10]. The people of Paradise are known, and the people of the Fire are known, and everyone is facilitated for what he was created for.
Considering the knowledge of Allah and His prior decree, the writing of these people and the writing of those people, and that everyone is facilitated for what Allah has written for him. Everyone has a will, a choice, a desire, and an action. This one does the deeds of the people of Paradise, so he is for it. This one does the deeds of the people of the Fire, so he is for the Fire. The decree of Allah is prior for everyone, and His argument is dominant and established, (Glorified and Exalted is He). He does not torment anyone except for his deed, not merely for the decree. The decree is prior, and nothing occurs in the knowledge of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) except what He wills, and nothing occurs in His dominion except what He wills. His knowledge and decree have passed, but among these people, some do the deeds of the people of Paradise and enter it, and some do the deeds of the people of the Fire and enter it by their will, desire, and choice. Just as he eats by his choice, drinks by his choice, visits whom he wishes by his choice, and goes out and enters by his choice, so he commits sin by his choice, associates partners with Allah by his choice, commits unlawful sexual intercourse by his choice, is undutiful to his parents, commits unlawful sexual intercourse, and drinks intoxicants with deeds that he chooses.
Just as he prays, fasts, and gives charity by his choice. So just as he is rewarded for these acts of obedience, he is punished for these sins, unless Allah forgives him. If he is a Muslim, some of his bad deeds may be forgiven because of the good deeds he did and the righteous deeds he performed. Allah may forgive him out of His favor and kindness. He may be punished for some of the bad deeds with which he died without repenting. But everything is by decree. The decree is past, and there is no argument in the decree, because the servant has a will, a choice, a desire, and an action. He deserves reward for it and punishment for it. Yes.
