The Ruling on the Mawlid Praises of the Prophets and the Awliya

The first message received by the program is from the sender (M. J.) in Raqqa, Syria. He begins his message and says: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy, and in Him we seek help. I am one of the listeners to the program *Nur 'ala al-Darb* (Light on the Path), which is the guide to the correct way.
The first question in his message states: We have, every Friday or Monday, a circle of dhikr in which they praise Allah, the Prophets, and the Messengers. Then they strike themselves with swords or iron rods, or they put themselves into the fire, saying: There is a secret between them and the Sayyid—meaning the Shaykh—through whom they adopt this method, and that no harm will befall them. They also bring the Sayyid sheep, gifts, and money, and they slaughter sacrifices for him, saying: This is for Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir, or al-Dasوقي, or so-and-so Shaykh! Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon His Messenger, our Prophet and our Imam and our Master Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his path and is guided by his guidance until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: This question is of grave concern, and it is a reality among many people as far as we have been informed. This is the practice of a group among the groups of the Sufiyyah, and it is an abominable act. As for the remembrance of Allah and sending prayers upon the Prophets (peace be upon them), this is a required matter and a prescribed matter. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) commanded His servants to remember Him and to send prayers upon His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as He said: : [Al-Ahzab: 41-42], and He said: : [Al-Imran: 190-191], the verse. And He (Mighty and Majestic) says: [Al-Ahzab: 56]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 408 So increasing the remembrance of Allah—His glorification, His exaltation, His praise, His magnification, and seeking His forgiveness—is a required matter. Likewise, increasing the sending of prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and upon all the Prophets and Messengers, is all good. But their practice in the form of circles, where they do this act of striking themselves with swords and other instruments with which they strike themselves, and entering the fire, all of this is abominable, and all of this is sorcery, deception, and trickery. This is an abominable act that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do, nor did his Companions, nor did the righteous Salaf among the four Imams: Malik, al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Abu Hanifa, nor others among the Imams of Islam such as al-Layth ibn Sa'd, al-Thawri, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, and others among the Imams of Islam. This is something that people have innovated, so it is an abominable act from which one must beware. They must be advised and directed to good. If their Shaykh has taken this from them, then their Shaykh has erred. So they must turn back from this error and not imitate their Shaykh in falsehood. The Imam who is followed is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he is the Imam of the Muslims and their leader, and he is the one who must be followed, as Allah (Exalted is He) said: [Al-Hashr: 7], and He said: : [Al-Imran: 31], and He (Exalted is He) said: [An-Nisa: 80].
So it is upon us to obey the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and follow what he brought in the great Book and the pure Sunnah. As for the practice of these people who deceive people and trick them with their ugly acts, such as striking themselves with whips or weapons or other things or sticks or anything else, all of this is abominable. Likewise, their entering the fire is also abominable. It is not permissible to enter the fire, and it is not permissible to deceive people with this matter. They may use things that they put in their bodies, of types of substances that are resistant to fire, thereby deceiving people. They claim that by this they are awliya (close friends of Allah). Yes, they are among the awliya of Shaytan. The awliya of Allah are only the people of taqwa (mindfulness of Allah), faith, and following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Yunus: 62-63], and Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: [At-Tawbah: 100]. These people did not follow them with ihsan (excellence in worship); they added many bid'ah (religious innovations) to them. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: meaning: it is rejected. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Sahih Muslim 1718b.
As for their giving sheep, money, and other wealth to their Shaykh, to whom they seek nearness, for whom they slaughter, and to whom they call for aid, this is shirk akbar (major shirk). Seeking aid and support from the dead, and seeking nearness to them with sacrifices and vows, is shirk akbar by the consensus of the Muslims, by the consensus of the people of knowledge and faith from the Salaf of the Ummah. There is no consideration for the disagreement of those who came after them in the end of time, who were ignorant of the religion of Allah and considered shirk (associating partners with Allah) to be a religion and a means of nearness. These people are not to be considered, and they are not to be relied upon. So the point is that calling upon the dead, seeking aid from the dead, or from the jinn, or from the angels, and seeking support from the dead from al-Rafai, or the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or al-'Idris, or Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, or Shaykh Ahmad al-Badawi, or al-Husayn, or others, all of this is shirk with Allah. Whoever seeks them, calls upon them for aid, makes vows to them, and seeks their support at their graves or far from their graves, this is shirk akbar, and it is the worship of other than Allah. So one must beware of that, and one must warn people from these misguided ones until Allah turns to them in repentance. We ask Allah for guidance for us and for them.
