The Ruling on Attaching Oneself to the Awliya

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We ask for clarification of the ruling on attaching oneself to the awliya and worshipping them, and for a warning against this and drawing attention to it.

A: The awliya: They are the believers, and they are the messengers (peace be upon them) and their followers with excellence. They are the people of taqwa and faith, and they are those who obey Allah and His Messenger. So all of these are the awliya, whether they are Arabs or non-Arabs, white or black, rich or poor, rulers or ruled, men or women. This is based on the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve
[Yunus 10:62]
those who believed and used to fear Allah [Yunus: 62 - 63]. These are the awliya of Allah who obeyed Allah and His Messenger and feared His anger, so they fulfilled His right and stayed away from what He forbade. These are the awliya, and they are the ones mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteousوَمَا كَانُوا أَوْلِيَاءَهُ إِنْ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُ إِلا الْمُتَّقُونَ
[Al-Anfal 8:34]
the verse [Al-Anfal: 34].
They are not people of sorcery or claimants of Satanic miracles and fabricated karamahs. Rather, they are the believers in Allah and His Messenger, obeying the command of Allah and His Messenger as mentioned before, whether they attain a karamah or not.
The Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are the most God-fearing of people and the best of people after the prophets. Most of them did not attain the miracles called karamahs because of their faith, taqwa, and knowledge of Allah and His religion. Therefore, Allah made them in need of no karamahs by that.
And He, the Exalted, said regarding the angels:
They cannot precede Him in word, and they act by His command.
[Al-Anbya 21:27]
They know what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not intercede except for one whom He approves, and they are fearful of Him. And whoever among them says, "I am a god other than Him," then We will recompense him with Hellfire. Thus We recompense the wrongdoers [Al-Anbiya: 27 - 29]. So it is not permissible for anyone to worship the messengers or the angels or any other of the awliya, nor to make vows to them, nor to slaughter for them, nor to ask them for the healing of the sick or victory over enemies or any other type of worship. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
[Al-Jinn: 18] and His saying, the Exalted:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Himوَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلا تَعْبُدُوا إِلا إِيَّاهُ
[Al-Isra: 23], and the meaning is "commanded and advised." And He, the Exalted, said:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth
[Al-Bayyinah 98:5]
the verse [Al-Bayyinah: 5], and the verses in this meaning are many.
Likewise, it is not permissible to circumambulate the graves of the awliya or anyone else; because circumambulation is specific to the Noble Ka'bah, and it is not permissible to circumambulate anything else. Whoever circumambulates the graves to draw near to their people by that has committed shirk, just as if he prayed to them or called upon them for aid or slaughtered for them. This is based on the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.قُلْ إِنَّ صَلاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝
[Al-An'am 6:162]
no partner has He, and thus I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims [Al-An'am: 162 - 163].
As for asking a living, capable, present creature for assistance in what he is able to do, that is not shirk. Rather, it is permissible, as in the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the story of Musa (peace be upon him):
So he who was among his followers called out to him for help against him who was among his enemies
[Al-Qasas: 15] and the generality of His saying, the Exalted:
cooperate in righteousness and pietyوَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى
[Al-Ma'idah: 2], and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1425Sahih (Darussalam)
and the verses and hadiths in this meaning are many, and it is a matter agreed upon by the Muslims. And success is from Allah.
