Explaining the Categories of the Shi'ah and the Ruling on Them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A Friday preacher gave a sermon in which he spoke about the Shi'ah, their wickedness, and their treachery, but he declared Khomeini a disbeliever. What is your opinion of one who declares a disbeliever anyone who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?

Answer:
The Shi'ah are divided into many categories. Shaykh al-Islam said that they are twenty-two parties, twenty-two sects. They are various groups. One category worships the People of the House and deifies them, such as 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Hasan, al-Husayn, Fatimah, al-Baqir, al-Sadiq, and others whom they deify. They call upon them instead of Allah and claim that they know the unseen. Such a person is a disbeliever, whether it is Khomeini or someone else.
As for one who does not do this, but loves them with mere love, and in whom there are some extra innovations, but they do not rise to the level of disbelief in Allah, he is an innovator, but he is not a disbeliever unless he does what necessitates disbelief, such as deifying them, worshipping them alongside Allah through supplication, calling for aid, seeking healing for the sick from them, seeking victory over enemies from them, and claiming that they know the unseen. This is major shirk.
As for those who insult al-Siddiq, insult 'Umar, and insult a group of the Companions, these are misguided and innovators of a great innovation. They are among the most wicked of people in this action. However, there is consideration regarding their disbelief; there is disagreement regarding their disbelief. Malik ibn Anas (may Allah have mercy on him) and a group declared them disbelievers, saying that their hatred of the Companions necessitates their disbelief. This is because Allah said regarding the Companions
so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelieversلِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَ
[Al-Fath: 29]. Therefore, those who are angered by the Companions and hate them are disbelievers based on this noble verse. This is because al-Siddiq is the head of the Muslims and the imam of the Muslims after the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If one declares al-Siddiq a disbeliever, insults al-Siddiq, and declares 'Umar a disbeliever, who remains?
These are the heads of the Companions. Therefore, the statement that one who insults al-Siddiq and 'Umar is a disbeliever is a strong position. This is because, in our belief, no one who has a mustard seed of faith in his heart would insult al-Siddiq and 'Umar and hate them. We ask Allah for well-being and safety.
Khomeini and his followers say that their imams have reached a station that no close angel and no sent prophet has reached. They mean by this the People of the House, his twelve companions in his book titled *The Islamic Government*. He says in it: "Our imams," meaning the People of the House whose head is 'Ali, and then al-Muntadhir who is in the underground chamber. These are their imams. They say that they have reached a station that no close angel and no sent prophet has reached, meaning above the prophets. They placed them above the prophets.
