The ruling on placing the Qur'an on the chest of the deceased before washing him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I saw a deceased person with the Qur'an on his chest. Is this permissible, or not?

Answer:
No, it is not prescribed to place the Qur'an on the deceased. However, some people heard that something is placed on the deceased, so they assumed the Qur'an was the best choice. The intention is not to place the Qur'an; the intention is to place something heavy on his stomach so that it does not swell until he is washed and transported to the cemetery. A piece of iron, a stone, or something similar is placed on his stomach to keep it from swelling until he is washed and the process is completed. The Qur'an is not placed on the deceased.
The mushaf is not a tool for weighing down the body. The mushaf is printed and bound to be read and benefited from, so the mushaf is not placed on the deceased. Instead, something heavy, such as wood, iron, or stone, is placed on the stomach. Some scholars have said this, stating that placing it on the body reduces swelling. The matter is easy in this regard, but the mushaf is not placed.
