The ruling on reciting the Qur'an over the deceased and placing the mushaf on his stomach
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The sister who indicated her name as H. H. H. from Riyadh says in her question: What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an over the deceased and placing the mushaf on his stomach, and does condolence have a limited number of days, as it is said that it is only three days? I ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good.
A: There is no authentic basis for reciting the Qur'an over the deceased or over the grave; rather, it is not prescribed, and it is a religious innovation. Likewise, placing the mushaf on his stomach has no basis and is not prescribed. Some scholars have mentioned placing an iron bar or something heavy on his stomach after death so that it does not swell.
As for condolence, it does not have a limited number of days. Rather, it is prescribed from the time the soul departs, before and after the funeral prayer. The pure Shari'ah sets no limit to its duration, whether that is at night or during the day, and whether it is in the house, on the road, in the mosque, in the cemetery, or in other places. And success is from Allah.
