Does the reward of reciting the Qur'an reach the deceased?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner: O Shaykh, if a person recites the Qur'an and dedicates its reward to his father, or to his friend, or to his brother, does the reward reach them?

Answer:
There is a difference of opinion among the scholars. Some scholars said that if he dedicates the reward, they hold that the reward reaches them, and this is the view of the majority of the scholars.
Others said that there is no report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from the Companions of doing this, so it is better for him to leave it. However, charity and supplication are better—if Allah wills—and there is no need to recite the Qur'an for this purpose. Each person should recite for himself, and his reward is for himself, because there is no report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from the Companions that they did this. Therefore, it is better not to do it.
However, if he gives charity on behalf of the deceased, whether in money or food, this benefits the deceased by the consensus of the Muslims. Likewise, supplicating for him for forgiveness and mercy in any place benefits him.
As for dedicating his prayer to him, or dedicating his recitation to him, there is no evidence for this. Similarly, if he dies and he had fasting upon him that he did not fast, and he had recovered from his illness, but he was lax and did not fast, it should be fasted on his behalf, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone dies in a state (that he had to complete) some fasts, his heir must fast on his behalf.من مات وعليه صيام؛ صام عنه وليه
Sahih Muslim 1147
his close relatives. Likewise, if he dies and he had the obligatory Hajj upon him that he did not perform, or he had a vowed Hajj upon him, it should be performed on his behalf. As for prayer, it is not prayed on his behalf, as there is no report of this.

Question:..

Answer: One does not pray on behalf of the deceased, and there is no basis for it.
