The ruling on befriending disbelievers for the purpose of learning English from them

Question:
I studied the English language in America, and since my return from there, I have not mixed with its speakers. My knowledge of this language has begun to diminish. Some of them advised me to befriend an Englishman or an American and speak with them frequently and visit them, while being careful to maintain my religious matters and preserve them. Is that permissible for me?

Answer:
No, but you can strengthen the language by other means than befriending disbelievers. Strengthen it by other means, such as speaking with your Muslim brothers who know the English language, or reviewing its grammar with those who teach it, so that your knowledge of it increases when you need it. If you do not need it, there is no point in this talk. But when you do need it, you can arrange to meet with some of your Muslim brothers who are proficient in it so that you can benefit from that. You do not need to befriend any of the disbelievers in order to learn from them.
