What is the ruling on seeking medical treatment? And does the patient sin if he abandons it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Perhaps we can take advantage of some of the time to ask you questions from our brother, Dr. Adnan Hamadah. May Allah reward you. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon His trustworthy Messenger. After that, these are questions directed from Dr. Adnan Hamadah. He says: The first question: What is the ruling on seeking medical treatment, in parentheses, obligatory or recommended or permissible? And based on that, does the one who abandons seeking medical treatment sin?

The Shaykh : The medicines that a patient takes are divided, in terms of the patient's belief in the effect of the medicine on his illness, into three categories. A category in which he is certain that it is a cure, and this is obligatory. A category in which it is more likely in his opinion that it is a cure, and this is recommended. And a category in which it is not more likely in his opinion that it is successful, and the recommended thing is to leave it, and what is other than that is not prescribed. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.

The questioner : From the completion of the t... excuse me, my Shaykh...

The Shaykh : And knowing these categories, a category returns to the experience by which it is more likely that it is certain or stronger or weaker. And some of these categories may be—the one who is driving seems to be Hussein?
The student : Yes, my Shaykh, Hussein.

The Shaykh : Yes, his driving was very good.
The student: Hehehe.

The Shaykh : Why doesn't Abu Abdullah give him a ride? A man had a limb cut off and he wanted it, and the blood was spurting from it, so it is without doubt that treating him is from the first category.

The questioner : It is obligatory.

The Shaykh : Because it is successful, and otherwise, if he left it and his blood was flowing, there would be his death and destruction.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : And of this kind are some treatments for known diseases today, like fever, the high temperature, which is lowered by a penicillin injection. What is this? Two examples of what surrounds the certain medicine's benefit, or are they two good examples of obligatory treatment? As for the stronger position, I often say that most medicines are like this; many of them are more likely to be beneficial in opinion. And the doctors are, in fact, the most capable people to represent this second type of medicine.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Is that clear?

The questioner : Very clear, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : The third example is what is not more likely in opinion, and the truth is that it is the best example of what the Shari'ah indicates, that the actual medicines now and the treatments, so speak of them and there is no harm, for the most trivial reasons. Who wants to walk?
The student : My Shaykh, straight away, my Shaykh, let's stay on the left.

The Shaykh : (peace be upon him) in the description of the seventy thousand who enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment, their faces are like the moon on the night of the full moon, he said:
They are those who do not use charms nor cauterise themselves nor seek omens and who rely on their Lord. هم الذين لا يسترقون ، ولا يكتوون ، ولا يتطيَّرون ، وعلى ربِّهم يتوكَّلون
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 911
, so the seeking of ruqyah here was a Shari'ah treatment, although it was permissible, it was the weaker position, and the reason, Allah knows best, is that the person does not think it is more likely that he is...The Shaykh : This blessed one, if he prays for him, that Allah will cure him of any pain that afflicted him, it is more likely in opinion that his supplication is answered. Based on this detail, the Muslim should proceed in his life with ease.
The student : On the left, no problem, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Today, especially women, for the most trivial reasons, they go to the doctor.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : There is no strong opinion that she is afflicted with a disease and that this disease's treatment is known and famous and it is more likely in opinion that it is successful. And therefore, from such diseases, the Muslim should be accustomed to relying on Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in them, like his leaving seeking ruqyah from other Muslims.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And with this, I think the answer to the question is sufficient.

The questioner: May Allah honor you, my Shaykh.
