Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it required in wiping the face during tayammum to cover the entire face with pure earth, or is it sufficient to merely pass the hands over the face?

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for a person in tayammum to wipe the entire face, based on the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
and wipe over your faces and hands with it فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
Just as it is obligatory to cover the entire head, as derived from His saying, the Exalted:
And wipe your heads وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ
so we derive the obligation to cover the entire face from His saying, the Exalted:
and wipe over your faces and hands with it فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
As for what some people do, namely wiping the nose and the area around it, this is an error. Rather, it is obligatory to wipe from ear to ear horizontally, and from the curve of the forehead to the bottom of the beard vertically.

The questioner : Abd al-Rahman, a resident of al-Khobar, says.
