The permissibility of adopting a kunya (nickname) even if a person is not married, or is married but has not yet been blessed with a child, and the evidence for this from the Sunnah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Do you have a kunya by which you are known?
The student : Yes, I am Abu al-Abbas.

The Shaykh : Abu al-Abbas, with a sin or a dal?
The student : With a sin.

The Shaykh : With a sin. O Abu al-Abbas, this is a Sunnah among the Sunnahs of Islam that a Muslim should adopt a kunya, even if he is not married, or if he is married but has not yet been blessed with a child. Our proof for this is the hadith of the Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said one day to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, all your wives have kunyas." He (peace be upon him) said to her:
Take the kunya of your nephew, 'Abdullah. اكتني بابن أختك عبد الله
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 850
; meaning: Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. From that day on, she became Umm Abdullah, although she had not been blessed with a child from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This is the first point.
