The Creed of Loyalty and Disavowal with Disbelievers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner: May Allah guide you. You mentioned, may Allah preserve you, that the creed of loyalty and disavowal is obligatory. Does this necessitate that we do not speak with disbelievers?

Answer:
The Shaykh: Did I say that?! We say: we speak with them and call them to Allah, and we sell to them and buy from them in permissible matters, and we take the jizyah (tax on protected non-Muslims) from them and allow them to reside in our lands or in their lands if they are there, under the rule of Islam. Worldly dealings that do not contradict [the religion] are fine. As for the matter of religion, we never compromise with them in our religion. As for worldly dealings, this is following interests and exchanging benefits between us and them. Likewise, those who have not harmed the Muslims, we reward them. (Allah does not forbid you from those who have not fought you for the religion and have not driven you out of your homes, from being kind to them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly). We reward them. So we deal with them in worldly matters, but as for the matter of religion, love, loyalty, and disavowal, no, we are upon our religion and we do not bargain over it. Yes. Likewise, there is no harm in making treaties with them and establishing agreements with them, according to the interest of the Muslims. There is no obstacle and no harm. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a treaty with the Muslims at al-Hudaybiyyah and made peace with them. If this is in the interest of the Muslims, there is no harm. Yes.
