Endowments and Bequests.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner asks about endowments and bequests: what are they? And is it obligatory for a Muslim to make a bequest before his death?

Answer:
Answer: An endowment is not the same as a bequest. An endowment is holding back the principal and making the benefit available for public use. If one endows something, it exits his ownership and becomes an endowment if it is immediate. If it is contingent upon death, it takes the ruling of a bequest. A bequest is when one bequeaths something after his death; he bequeaths something from his wealth, a third or less, after his death, in the paths of righteousness and benevolence, in order to obtain reward for the bequeather. This is the bequest.
