The Ruling on Tawassul and Its Categories

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on tawassul and what are its categories? Is tawassul through the status of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permissible?

Answer:
Answer: Tawassul is approaching Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and the means (wasilah) is obedience and nearness. Allah the Exalted said: (O you who believe! Fear Allah and seek the means to Him), meaning nearness to Him (Glorified and Exalted is He) through His obedience and worship. As for tawassul through persons, such as tawassul through the supplication of the righteous, where you ask your righteous brother to supplicate to Allah for you, there is no harm in that. This is tawassul through the supplication of the righteous, not through their bodies or their status. Likewise, tawassul through the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is tawassul through following him, obeying him, and loving him. Also, tawassul through the supplication of the righteous, where you ask them to supplicate to Allah for you if they are present with you and able to supplicate, you ask them for that. You do not ask an absent person, or a dead person, or a jinn. You only ask for supplication from one who is present. You do not ask for supplication from a dead person; rather, the supplication is from the living one who is able to supplicate. As for tawassul through status (jah), this is not permissible. This is an innovation. Tawassul through status, or through the right of the righteous, or through the right, all of this is an innovation. As for tawassul also through the righteous deeds that preceded from you, you tawassul to Allah with them, and there is no harm in that, by the evidence of the hadith of the people of the cave, where the rock closed over them and they could not get out. Each of them tawassul with his righteous deeds, and Allah relieved them through that tawassul. Tawassul to Allah with His names and attributes. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: (And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them). You say, O Merciful, have mercy on me; O Provider, provide for me; O Forgiver, forgive me, and so on.
